5 Basic SEO For Blog Posts For Beginners

basic seo for blog posts

Today I discuss the basic SEO for blog posts for beginners. After learning about Search Engine Optimization -SEO, I discovered that the best place to begin as a blogger is with your posts.  By adding search engine optimization one creates content that is more easily found via search engines, you end up saving time and money, SEO allows you to create content that essentially markets itself for free.  I use WordPress for my blog, WordPress website is easy for search engines to crawl and easy for you to update and provide fresh content regularly

Here are some basic SEO for blog posts you can implement

Carefully Choose Keywords

Keywords are the search terms that people are using in search engines, so you have to be careful that you’re using the same search terms your potential visitors are using. Many times when people are searching for an item they specify what they want, its normally more than one word, more like a phrase. For example when I am looking for a pair of shoes, I know what kind of shoes I want and so I will be specific. I want a pair of  “yellow nike womens shoes”. My results will be more specific than when I search for “shoes”

Write a good title: Include keyword in Title and URL

It is a must to use your keyword phrase in the title and url of your blog post as this is very powerful for seo.

By default, WordPress will give you numbers for your post’s URL. Make sure you change this under Settings –> Permalinks. I use the custom structure “/%post_id%/%postname%”. Whatever you use, you will want to be sure it will use your keyword phrase instead of meaningless numbers.

Body of article And Meta Description

Many times bloggers have a great title, but then write a long kind of article that does not use the keyword not even once. Google might not be really sure what your article is all about.

Its best to use the keyword phrase near the beginning, as well as in the conclusion of the article. Use it in a heading too, if it makes sense. It is very important to have a readable article. do not use the keyword TOO much, so much that it does not make sense.  Think quality of article over quantity of keywords.

Use your keyword in the meta description, which you can add via a plugin like All In One SEO or Yoast SEO. I use Yoast SEO and it very easy to follow.

Add Alt for images

Make use of the Alt tag, which is read by the search engines, even though they cannot “see” the image. This can be easily added in WordPress when you upload the image, under Alternate Text. Posts have images name the images “your keyword” , For example for this blog post my image will be “Basic SEO For Blog Posts”

Interlinking pages

If you have relevant information in another page or post on your site, link to it, using keywords appropriate to the linked article as the anchor text of the link.
You can easily do this using a WordPress plug-in, Yet Another Related Posts Plugin.

This is just the beginning to get you started.

    Hi Siphosith,

Thanks for writing about this one! In the past, I have neglected to do it. Now it is a habit for me. The alt text is so important, even on our images.

Before I press that publish button I make sure that all of this is done and found that since I’ve been doing it, Google likes me!

Just a thought to consider for newbies in blogging and/or SEO: Before doing the SEO, the 1st thing is connecting it to Google and Bing Webmaster tools, that way you can make sure your site is being crawled correctly, otherwise using Yoast won’t do much good.

  • Great article and excellent for clarity. I have always found most people learn a little about SEO. Then, never learn how to apply it correctly. The articles always turn out useless? They, have allot of nothing and sales pitches only with words duplicating themselves.

We can always hope for better as they learn more on application.
