Common Affiliate Marketing Mistakes

Like all businesses, there are lots of common affiliate marketing mistakes committed by affiliates before getting the business right. Committing some of the most common affiliate marketing mistakes will cost the marketers a large portion  from the profit they are making everyday. That is why it is better to avoid them than be regretful in the end.  Affiliate marketing is one of the most effective and powerful ways of earning some money online, when done right.

 Joining too many affiliate programs.

A lot of affiliate programs are very easy to join, and it is very tempting to join multiples of affiliate programs to try and maximize the earnings you will be getting. Anyway, you may think that there is no harm and nothing to lose by being part of many affiliate programs.

Very true, that is a great way to have multiple income sources coming your way. However, joining multiple programs and attempting to promote them all at the same time will prevent you from concentrating on each one of them. Have you heard a jack of all trades and a master of none.

What will be the end result? The maximum potential of your affiliate program is not realized and the income generated will not exactly be as huge as you initially thought it would. Many times affiliates will be instantly rich with all these programs they joined.

Do This Instead:

To get excellent result , the best way is by joining just one program that pays a commission of at least 40% . Give it your best effort by promoting your products enthusiastically. As soon as you see that it is already making a reasonable profit, then maybe you can now join another affiliate program.

The technique is to do it slowly but surely. There is really no need to rush into things, especially with affiliate marketing. Looking at how things are going, the future is looking real bright and it seems affiliate marketing will be staying for a long long time .

  Choosing the wrong affiliate.

A lot of people want to earn from affiliate marketing as quick as possible. So in their rush to be part of one, they tend to choose a just “any” product. This is the kind of product that the affiliate thinks is “hot”.  This is not a very wise move obviously. They choose the product that is in demand without actually considering if the product appeals to them .

Do this Instead:

Try top choose a product in which you are truly interested in. For any endeavor to succeed, you should take some time to plan and figure out your actions. Pick a product that appeals to you. Then do some research about that product to see if it is in demand. Promoting a product you are more passionate about is easier than promoting one for the sake of the earnings only.

Not buying the product or using the service.

As an affiliate, you main purpose is to effectively and convincingly promote a product or service and to find customers. For you to achieve this purpose, you must be able to relay to the customers that certain product and service. It is therefore difficult for you to do this when you yourself have not tried these things out. Thus, you will fail to promote and recommend them convincingly. You will also fail to create a desire in your customers to want to use any of what you are offering.

 Do this Instead:

Try the product or service personally first before you sign up as an affiliate to see if it is really delivering what it promises. If you have done so, then you are one of the credible and living testaments aware of its advantages and disadvantages. Your customers will then feel the sincerity and truthfulness in you and this will trigger them to try them out for themselves.

Many affiliate marketers make these common affiliate marketing mistakes and are paying dearly for their actions. To not fall into the same situation they have been in, try to avoid making the same mistakes.

Here is a good example of an affiliate program that I use for building a list and also sending emails to promote my business, and many people use it as well because it is reliable, very essential for internet marketers.

      Great post Siphosith,
There are so many mistakes i usually see people making while trying to make money with affiliate marketing and the ones you mentioned here are the most common ones.

Joining so many different affiliate programs is really on top of the list. These will somehow get you overwhelmed and before you realize whats happening, you will start loosing focus.

Its always better to focus on one platform at a time and see how it goes before looking out for another one but at maximum, i advice being into at 3 platforms. I consider anything more than that too much.

It’s so easy to get lost in the sauce of Internet/affiliate

And if you don’t have access to a experienced marketer (such as yourself)
to help guide you through the maze, especially in the beginning,
you’ll probably end up extremely frustrated!

And you probably won’t a dime or very little!

Thanks for sharing some excellent and extremely practical, real world advice!

      Hi Siphosith,
I’m just from reading an affiliate marketing post on David’s blog and you both have decided to educate us (I guess 😉 )

I think these really are mistakes especially not promoting a product from practical knowledge. Using a product before its promotion gives one a better ground to share experience and convert better.

thanks for your education dear friend

One thing I’ve noticed about blogs that have too many affiliate programs, is that it takes away from the focus of the blog, and then it doesn’t look like they have a particular brand. Any affiliate programs one has should add to, or expand on, their branding and focus.

These are SO TRUE! When I first started, I joined every affiliate program I could get a link to. And it was a fruitless and frustrating experience. Now, I’m much more selective and choose a lot more wisely. And it’s still too much 🙂

Siphosith, You are so right about not joining too many affiliate programs. I did this when I first started blogging and it did not work out well. Now I have a few select affiliates whose products I really like and this has been much better. Thanks for your suggestions and help!

      Hi Siphosith,

I am really stuck in the first point since I have many affiliate programs that I am promoting. I guess I have to decrease the limit of them and hope that works. So far, I am making exact zero from affiliate marketing any suggestion will be gladly accepted.

      Thank You

Welcome to my blog Saqib. It would be best to choose a few programs that you are using yourself and that way you are able to talk about them showing results.

The one things that is so powerful about your article. Truth!

I was not amazed you would bring this activity of using the products and services. That is how and the only way one will be able to make a real difference.

If I would not use a product or service. Then, I could not ethically, show any enthusiasm on it. There would be no point in sharing it with anyone.

We have to experience things ourselves. Prior to sharing them. It just makes sense and will grow your revenue.

      Thanks Siphosith, always learning.

      Hello Siphosith.

I have made the mistake of signing up for too many affiliate programs, so I agree with you that selecting less is more! However, I’ve never seen an affiliate program offering a commission of 40% — in health and wellness at least. Most of the rates are well under 10%. So, I think they must vary quite a bit based on industry. With what kind of businesses have you seen commission rates at 40%+?

Programs vary in their rates. Clickbank has one of the highest paying rates-they sell digital information mostly and their rates go up to 75%. Read some here.
